Falcons earn FalconFest Championship..

After losing in last year’s FalconFest title game, the Brownsville Falcon boys basketball team came back strong,  winning their second championship in three years with a 54-42 victory over the Elizabeth Forward Warriors.  Senior guard Josh Mapstone and junior guard Cole Novotney got the Falcons off on the right track with 5 points a piece in the first quarter.  The Falcons held a 13-8 lead after the first 8 minutes.

In the second quarter, Brownsville turned things up on the inside with senior forwards Jake Bevard and Michael Murdock scoring four points a piece.  Going into halftime, the Falcons held a 23-15 lead.  Murdock, a relentless sixth man, was the leading scorer at the half with six points.

The Falcons, who never trailed throughout the game, had an answer for every Elizabeth Forward basket.  Novotney scored 8 points, including two threes, in the third quarter, which the Falcons won 14-12.

Novotney scored 12 of his game-high 17 points in the second half.  Murdock also finished in double digits with 10 points.

The Falcons will play their first road game of the season on Tuesday, when they travel cross-county to York Run in a non-section game against the Albert Gallatin Colonials.

Lady Falcons fall in title game..

The Brownsville Lady Falcon basketball team was unable to make it two-in-a-row to start the season, as the Chartiers-Houston Lady Buccaneers won the girls bracket of the FalconFest tip-off tournament with a 64-20 win.  Chartiers-Houston scored the first six points of the game before freshman Maris Seto scored to make it 6-2.  The Lady Bucs would out-score the Lady Falcons 5-1 during the rest of the first quarter to go up 11-3.

As was the case in the first quarter, Chartiers-Houston’s defense forced a lot of turnovers in the second quarter, holding the Falcons to just four points in the second frame.  At the half, the Lady Bucs led 33-7.

Freshman Sirena Smith scored three baskets in the third quarter for 6 of Brownsville’s 10 third-quarter points.  Through three, the Lady Falcons trailed 50-17.

Smith paced the Lady Falcons with six points.  Seto and sophpomore Maddison Angelone each chipped in with 4.

Coach Golembiewski’s Lady Falcons will return to action at home on Wednesday, when they host the Carmichaels Lady Mikes.  On Thursday, they will play their first road game of the season as they travel to West Mifflin to take on the Lady Titans, marking the start of section play.
