Girls Tennis
2010
For the second time in as many matches, the Brownsville Girls Tennis team won the first two of five matches, only to have their opponents win the following three and the match. Brownsville (0-2) dropped a 3-2 decision to the visiting Greensburg-Salem Golden Lions at the Brownsville tennis courts this afternoon. The Lady Falcons secured the first point of the match as senior Angie Pelehac won 6-1, 6-0 at #2 singles. Things were looking good for Coach Lonigro's team as junior Sarah Shashura did not give up a game for the second straight match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #1 singles. Thirty minutes into the match, the Lady Falcons led 2-0.
Sophomore Kayla Bayne was able to keep it close through both sets, but Greensburg-Salem's #3 singles player won the key games late in both sets to win in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. The Lady Falcon lead was trimmed to 2-1. The Golden Lions tied the match score at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Brownsville's Valerie Columbia and Megan Yocabet at #1 Doubles.
As was often the case during the boys season in the spring, the match came down to one of the doubles matches. In this case, it was the #2 doubles match, which had the Brownsville duo of Payton Ferguson and Angela Becker battling it out against Greensburg-Salem. Ferguson and Becker found themselves up 5-2 in the first set, but lost four out of the next five games, sending the first set into a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker was won by the Golden Lions, 8-6. The second set saw ties at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, and 4-4, before Greensburg-Salem won the subsequent two games to win the set and the match, 6-4.
The Lady Falcons return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Jeannette to take on the Lady Jayhawks. Brownsville will return to home action on
Thursday to take on the Greensburg Central Catholic Lady Centruions. Match time will be 3:30.
